How to Rejoice When Life Is Hard

Why am I going through this?

It’s a question almost everyone asks when suffering enters their life. Whether it’s illness, loss, disappointment, disability, persecution, or some other trial, hardship often leaves us wondering what God is doing and why He would allow it.

In 1 Peter 1:6–9, Peter gives a surprising command: rejoice.

At first glance, that seems impossible. How can anyone rejoice while they are grieving through trials? Peter’s answer is found in three important truths.

1. Trials Refine Your Faith

Peter compares faith to gold that is tested by fire. Just as fire removes impurities from gold, trials reveal and strengthen genuine faith.

When suffering drives us to prayer, deepens our dependence on God, and causes us to trust His promises, our faith is being refined. Trials are never pleasant, but God uses them to accomplish something valuable in the lives of His people.

2. Trials Point Us to God’s Purpose

Peter explains that a tested faith results in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

As believers look back on God’s faithfulness through every trial, they will have even greater reason to praise Him. The hardships we face today are not meaningless. God is actively at work through them, teaching us to trust Him and reminding us that He has never left us.

Even in the darkest moments, God remains present with His people.

3. Trials Remind Us of Our Future Hope

The greatest reason believers can rejoice is not found in the trial itself but in the hope that lies beyond it.

Peter reminds us that although we have not seen Christ, we love Him and believe in Him. Because of that faith, we look forward to the day when He returns and our salvation is fully realized.

This future hope changes how we view present suffering. Our trials may feel overwhelming today, but compared to eternity, they are temporary. One day Christ will wipe away every tear, remove every pain, and bring His people safely home.

Looking Deeper

These truths provide a foundation for understanding suffering, but Peter’s words contain even more encouragement than can be covered in a brief article. Why are trials necessary? How exactly do they test and refine our faith? What does Peter mean by “joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory”? And how does our future salvation help us endure present difficulties?

In our latest video, we take a closer look at 1 Peter 1:6–9 and explore how God uses trials to strengthen our faith, deepen our dependence on Him, and fix our eyes on the eternal hope we have in Christ.
