Do You Really Have Victory in Christ?
Can you actually live in victory as a Christian—or is that just a nice idea?
In 1 John 5, the apostle John says victory isn’t only possible—it’s promised. But it’s not found in our performance. It’s rooted in our identity as those who have been born of God.
Here are three marks of someone who walks in that victory:
1. Authentic Faith
“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God…” (v. 1a)
Faith doesn’t cause new birth—it results from it. If you believe, it’s because God has already made you new. That kind of faith endures because it’s grounded in God’s work, not our will.
2. Active Love
“…and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.” (v. 1b)
New birth doesn’t just give you a relationship with God—it connects you to His people. Real love for God always overflows into love for others.
3. Applied Obedience
“By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.” (v. 2)
For those born of God, obedience isn’t a burden—it’s a delight. It’s not about earning anything, but about living in step with the One we love.
The Victory That’s Already Yours
“Everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world… and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” (v. 4)
If you’re in Christ, you’re not working toward victory—you’re living in it.
